1st Impression Thoughts on LOTRO: Helm’s Deep, Part 1, Classes.

lord-of-the-rings-online-helms-deep

Like some of you I have been waiting for Rohan from the very 1st moment I logged into Lord Of The Rings Online. Back when I was a lil newbie hunter (2007), I ran to the Shire to see Bag End, Then to Bree to have an ale at the Prancing Pony.. Then I tried to run to Rivendell and quickly found out that it was no easy task. Then I got my 1st Hunter Swift travel, and wondered, “How many more ports does the hunter get” so I asked in Regional in Bree for assistance getting to Rivendell, and some kindly hunter helped me find my way. When we arrived at the Last Homely House, I asked the hunter.. can you port me to Rohan? And with a frown, she said that Rohan has yet to be added to the game.. I was a bit upset.. but accepted it.. and moved on..  Now, 5 years later we start to get a glimpse of Rohan with “The Great River” addon.. I was so excited to be entering Rohan I couldn’t contain myself. Turbine said that they wanted to get Rohan, “Right” they wanted to make it an epic experience. (Not a quote, but this was the message I got from what they said)

So what happened!?!?….

Im very sad to say, that Rohan isn’t “Right” and its defiantly not an Epic experience.. Riders of Rohan, & Helms Deep has to be the most unexciting, unrewarding, uninteresting, & underwhelming expansion yet.. It “Looks” amazing.. Mounted combat is probably the best version of the system I have seen in any game, if it worked properly 100% of the time.. being dismounted by puddle’s.. Laggy-ness.. Rubber-banding.. ect.. really put a damper on the whole experience.. RoR pushed back a few weeks to make sure everything was “Right” just to log in to numerous bugs, and a unplayable Mounted Combat system.. Debacle #1.. Then we get to the release of Helms Deep, Debacle #2.. Power outage on the eve of expansion release.. im sorry.. you may have had no power, but it sure was a coincidence that it happen at release? and then took 12 hours to get it back up and running “AFTER” the power came back on.. 0.o I have to wonder if there was more going on behind the scene’s than Turbine let on. Oh and lets not forget about the Rise of Isengard, Instance Cluster debacle as well.. but we wont go into details on that today.. Its really getting frustrating that every time we get a new expansion, there is a debacle that comes along with it..

So, now that I have that off my chest, lets move on to the Helm’s Deep expansion and go into more detail.. from my point of view.

The Female Hobbit Walk Animation: I let the video tell the tale

This video has quickly became one of the most watched videos on my channel, in the short time it has been up.. thanks to everyone who shared, commented, liked, and watched this video..

Now lets talk about classes. Im only going to cover the classes I play, which are The Hunter, The Minstrel & The Captain. I have no idea what has happened to the other classes, but I’m sure similar things have happened to them, because the changes to the 3 classes I play tend to be along the same path.

The Hunter: My Current Main as of Riders Of Rohan:

Elah_Lotro

When I heard they were taking what a hunter was, and splitting it up between 3 trees, I lost all hope for my hunter. The difference between a Huntard and a Hunter is defined simply. A Huntard is a Pew Pew, look at me do damage type player, totally ignores the battle and does his best to hit high numbers in DPS w/o any care of what is going on around him.. a Hunter plays his class to its fullest extent he evaluates the battle, does his pew pew, protects the healer with traps & other forms of CC, he also keeps an eye out for poisoned raid members and cleanses their aliments quickly. So we covered 3 things that a Hunter does, Cleansing, Crowd Control & DPS.. now we cant do but one at a time, effectively.. because these three things have been split into three separate trees. The hunter has become a restricted, border-lined boring class to play, since you can no longer control the flow of battle. Now its not as bad as things may seem.. The Red Line does some pretty good damage at long range. The Yellow line (Or The Trapper Of Foes Line) focuses on sustained damage & trapping, and the Blue line kind of feels like an in between Red/Yellow Line, it offers a 25% OOC Run Speed Increase, and is classified as a Mobile Harassing Hunter…… oh kay…. In my honest opinion the Red line is closest to what a hunter used to be, minus the self heals that seem to be gone completely . Some of the new animations with the hunter really bother me, one is the bow draw animation in the blue line.. I have never seen anyone draw a bow like that, and im a RL hunter of 20+ years. When cruising along at 25% run speed increase there seems to be a bit of a glitch in the animation as well.. also GIVE ME BACK MY QUICK TRAPS! They removed the consumable item traps and made some of them skills.. take that crafters.. as if the store doesn’t already steal business from crafters enough already. In general, the changes to the hunter are not as bad as I expected, The Red Line is my line of choice.. I don’t have any real traps to speak of, but I still have my bards arrow, thank god.. so I will be leveling my hunter,  whether or not she will continue to be my main, is still on the table.

The Minstrel: In the lead for becoming my new main.

Sindaloria_Lotro

Now on to the Minstrel.. The Red Line, as you should expect with most classes is delivering more DPS than ever before, even in the yellow line, which is a kind of blend of the Red & Blue lines, its doing more DPS than the Mini has done before Helms Deep.. They removed the anthem that gives a Heal over time.. not sure if its in the Blue line or not, as I have concentrated on the Red and Yellow lines and haven’t had the opportunity to heal a group situation to test out Blue (Which is the healing spec) With that HOT missing, I have been noticing some survival issues at level 70-75.. unsure past that as I am currently at 75. I have been playing this toon exclusively for about 2 months, even more so since the 100% XP boost we had for a month, been leveling with a friend (Warden) as long as he is holding aggro.. survival is not an issue.. but if I solo, and I pull more than one mob, I’m healing my butt off.. and this wasn’t the case Pre-HD. Personal heals in Dissonance Stance (War Speech) are terrible, in my opinion these person heals should be strong, like they were before HD, we cannot use them on other still, but my biggest heal only does less than a 1/4 of my health.. which makes solo’ing hard. So in general, the survival issue is really bothering me, if I wasn’t leveling with a friend, I wouldn’t be playing the the Minstrel at all.. too many headaches. But im managing.. its not as bad as it could have been.

The Captain: OMFGWTFBBQSAUCE WOW!

belahwen_lotro_thumb

The changes to the Captain have really revitalized the class for me, The Red Line delivers some very good damage, compared to Pre-HD.. Some think that the spirit of what the Captain was/is has been lost, and that may very well be true, but this re-incarnation of the class has really peaked my interest, I have yet to try the Blue or Yellow lines as I am have way too much fun blowing shit up in the Red Line! I’m am looking forward to checking out the other lines in the future, But right now, when I’m playing solo.. I’m playing the Captain.. followed by the Hunter. I have to say this tho, and this really doesn’t have much to do with Helms Deep, being a Riders Of Rohan feature.. Mounted Combat is pretty boring at the moment, I’m guessing once I get the steed leveled and points spent in tree’s it will get better.. but its nothing like my Hunter or my Minstrel at all.. In general I have to give Turbine kudos for buffing the Captain.. and re-imagining the class all together.. it’s a very welcome breath of fresh air, as I have been leveling my cappy since 2008-2009 and it has been a slow, painful journey up till now!

Classes In General: Turbine… don’t you even think of nerf-ing any class!

One thing I have to say is it looks as tho most classes are experiencing a feel of OP-ness.. (Over Powered-ness) this could be a mis-calculation on Turbines part, or it could be working as intended, which I hope the latter is the case.. but.. and this is a big ole BUT! Turbine… don’t you even think of nerf-ing these classes.. this would be the final straw for me.. The new found power of my classes has restored some of the interest in leveling again, the loss of that, would mean my complete loss in interest of your game. I rant a lot about LotRO alot, as those of you who follow me on twitter, know well.. that’s because I love this game, and in my opinion Turbine & WB is destroying what this game was.. its starting to feel like, just another theme park MMO, when it used to be set apart from all games in the genre.. Helm’s Deep is the 1st expansion I didn’t pre-order.. I spent a month at 2-3 hours per day grinding Turbine points to buy it (want to see how I did it CLICK HERE!) and im glad I did, because if I had paid 40-100$ for this expansion, I probably would have quit.. but its nice to be able to spend time earning expansions, then spending cash.. its really the only thing that keeps me playing the game.

celtbar4

Okay so I have already wrote a damn book, I bet this has to be my longest blog post ever.. so im going to split it up into two parts, as I would like to hop in game today and play Open-mouthed smile and not write all day, the next impressions post will come in about a week, and it will cover Helm’s Deep in general.. as I have only played up to the part where Gandalf saves Theoden from the clutches of Grimma in the epic line. This week I will spend more time playing in West Rohan, and if I can stomach it.. I will try the new EPIC BATTLES (Skirmishes with new features) that’s replacing traditional dungeons in the expansion, I have zero interest in these new Epic Battles.. it’s a gimmick im my opinion.. and a terrible implementation of the Battle of Helms Deep.. but we will go into that more in the next post! Sorry it wasn’t a video, but editing became a pain, and my editor kept crashing.. so its becoming a blog post instead!

Thanks as always for watching my videos and reading my blog! I hope you get something from visisting my site, because I do it for the people who follow me.. and for fun as well! but it wouldn’t be fun, if no one was reading/watching! Thanks again! …and I will see you in game!

The Grind to a Free Helms Deep Quest Pack

tptotal

So for those of you who don’t follow me on twitter, I have decided to grind the Turbine points needed to purchase my copy of the Helms Deep Quest pack, (notice I did not say expansion) I personally feel that the new content coming to Lotro is not worth the 40$ they are asking, since its not a true expansion. No instance cluster is fine with me, as I do not raid or do dungeons, but the fact that they are charging a full expac price for what is more or less a quest pack, really erks me. If they offered a 20-25$ pack with no TP and no Pre-order goodies, I would have purchased without any resistance.. but  that doesn’t look like its going to happen.

I started this quest with around 600 tp that I has accumulated in various ways, no cash, and now I have reached 1717 Turbine Points. I figure that the Helms Deep quest pack shouldn’t cost more than 4500 TP, and if I did the math right, I should only have to do the 12 deeds, 18 times to bring me to 4500tp… 18 times.. in 2 months.. to me that’s an easy task!

tpgrindteam

The system that im using is pretty simple, I use 2 accounts, my 2nd account has a level 30 Hobbit hunter, which gives me a run speed increase, and ports to speed up the process. I create a new character on my main account, level it through the noobie instance and come into the “real” world at level 6. That character then auto follows the level 30 hunter on my second account, and I run around the world completing the 30/60 slayer deeds in the 3 starter zones..(The Shire, Ered Luin & Bree-land) the level 30 can pretty much one/two shot everything, so the deeds complete quickly! After I complete these deeds, I delete the character on my main account, and make a new one, and repeat the process. Pretty simple.. very grindy, but effective. I have been thinking of adding in a few of the explorer deeds that I pick up along the way, to net even more Turbine Points, I need to sit down and do some cartography work, and plot a course to see if the extra running would be beneficial.

I will be doing a more complex write up here on my blog after I have fine tuned the process I use.. with maps and video instructions for those who are interested. So stay tuned to the blog & follow me on twitter.. (@doug200463) but for now, its sleep time.. will be picking up where I left off tomorrow.. Safe Travels Middle-earthlings! See you in game.

If you would like to follow me along in game I play on the Landroval server, Sambingals is the toon im running on, feel free to hop in game and tag along! And dont forget to check out the guide i created explaining in detail how I grind my points: https://middleearthchronicles.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/turbine-point-grinding-guide/

Hello Virtual World Explorers

1229927_632434323455523_1465177748_n

I have come to a conclusion that blogging is a seasonal thing for me, during the spring and summer the last thing I want to do is sit in front of my computer all day, Yes I still play games, but I do not want to spend more of my time writing in a blog.. at least not as often.. so with that said, IM BACK! Open-mouthed smile

Its Autumn in my corner of the world, leaves are beginning to fall, and temperatures are starting to drop.. and I find myself spending more time indoors, and finding myself getting bored far to often.. so here I am writing again! Open-mouthed smile Sometimes I will post, and sometimes I wont, Much like some of the other blogs I follow like: DocHolidays MMO blog @ http://docholidaymmo.com/ & Clarysta Sunshine’s (That’s what C Said) Lotro Blog @ http://clarystainsunshine.blogspot.com/

I do this because sometimes I enjoy it, sometimes I just don’t have time, and sometimes I just don’t want to, and I find when it becomes something that I “Have” to do, I want to do it less. Im by no means a professional writer, my grammar sucks, my punctuation is sometimes wrong, and my structure is somewhat outta wack! But I need a place to speak my mind, I find that social media sites like Facebook & Twitter just don’t cut it alone.. when I speak my mind on Facebook, I get banned from their site (Hello Lotro, Im talking about you!) and Twitter, well, 140 characters just isn’t enough.

As you can see, this site is no longer going to be called Middle-earth Chronicles, the url will be the same, the twitter account will be the same, but the name has changed to Virtual World Chronicles.. This blog used to be mostly a Lord of the Rings online blog, but since the change Warner Bros. has made with Turbine and the game, I have found myself playing many other games, and not just LOTRO, yes, ill still post stuff concerning Lotro, but I will covering my adventures in many other games as well.

So since I left LOTRO about 6-7 months ago due to the lack of customer service concerning Mounted Combat, I have reached the level cap in Guild Wars 2, The much anticipated Neverwinter let me down, with there extreme focus on Pay to Win.. I have messed around with The Secret World, Star Trek Online, SWTOR, Defiance, and even ventured outside the realm of MMO’s and started playing The Witcher & Skyrim. But with the current fix to Mounted Combat, im back playing Lotro again.. what can I say, im a sucker for Middle-earth & anything Tolkien.

So yea.. hopefully some of you are still out there, I see in my dashboard that I still get a few visits now and then, so im guessing some of you have stuck around.. and I thank you for that! If your reading  this, please let me know, positive or not.. I would love to hear from you!

New LOTRO Expansion.. An Unexpected Journey

UN_Journ

No this is not an official expansion announcement, but more of an idea that I think Turbine would benefit from if they implemented something like this. With the Hobbit movies just around the corner I really think Turbine would be stupid to not take advantage of this idea.. after all, now that Warner Brothers now owns Turbine.. there is nothing stopping them. So what is this idea I speak of? An expansion to LOTRO that is based on the Hobbit story line! …Well that’s impossible you say? The story of the Hobbit took place many years before the current timeline we play in.. BUT if Turbine implemented it right, it could easily be done. Here is one example that came to me as I was listening to the latest “Contains Moderate Peril” Podcast, where they were talking about “Hobbit” related video games. (You can find that podcast here: http://www.containsmoderateperil.com/contains-moderate-peril-episode-79-right-turn-clyde/ )

Many of you former World Of Warcraft Players probably remember the Burning Crusade expansion feature called “The Caverns Of Time” which allowed players to step back in time to experience a part of the storyline that happened years before the current world in which we played W.O.W today.  Turbine could very easily do this very same thing, but instead of having us go back in time, We head to Rivendell and speak to Mr. Baggins himself, and he offers you a quest. This quest could be to sit down and listen to Bilbo tell the story of his “Unexpected Journey”. Once this quest was accepted you would be wooshed off to Northern Mirkwood, and be able to play a quest line similar to the Epic quest line we play today in Lotro today, That takes our characters on the adventures portrayed in “The Hobbit”

I really feel that something like this released during the lifespan of the 3 movies being released, would increase the LOTRO player base, Increase the popularity of the game, and put a lot more money in Turbines pockets’s.

I would really love to see a Hobbit themed expansion in Lotro, even if its just a Enedwaith/Great River style addition to the game. It would be fun, and I would bet money that (if implemented right) the Lotro community would eat it up!

What do you think? Would you buy a “Hobbit” themed expansion for Lotro? Leave me a comment with your ideas, and thanks for reading!

How the noob falls…

th_newb

Soo I was running errands today and I received a call from my sister, when I hang up the phone I noticed I was at 92 subs! I was excited cuse I was getting close to giving away this LOTRO Mithril Edition Box sitting here on my desk, I also seen I had multiple emails, so I browsed over to check them, and while I was waiting for the page to load, my phone went nuts, new mail, new mail, new mail.. 10+ mails in about 10 minutes.. so after my phone stopped freaking out, I went to my email account, and seen that 10+ new people had subscribed to my YouTube channel in under 10 minutes, and it listed them with no name, just “a New User”. This looked fishy to me, so I checked how much time was in between each email, and it was just about 1 minute between each one.. consistently… even more fishy… to make a long story short, I get home and sit down, surf over to my email and the “a new user” account has a link to each account so I make note on paper of each account, then head to my YouTube channel, and I have this message in my inbox(and im not going to use his name, ill explain why later)

“Hi, We got 100 subs , time to roll!”

When I saw this message I knew this was the newb who made all the accounts, so I replied:

“Well unfortunately “Someone” created 10+ accounts in a matter of 10+ minutes this afternoon, I can track subs in real time on my phone, its obvious that someone was creating these accounts to cheat.. because the time in-between subscriptions is very close on all of them.. so those do not count.” (Remember I only wrote this because I had a very good feeling that this was the guy who made the accounts to cheat)

about 15 minutes later he replies with this:

“Man… I’ve spent an afternoon raising your subs to 100.
So all my work was a waste of time????
By the way, can I take part with this account which (as you see ) wasn’t created for sub-raising?”

LOL.. some people.. anyways, I told him if he unsubbed all the fake accounts he made (and I know wich ones, cuse the emails I received from youtube, link to the accounts) I would let him enter with his legit account. (hence the reason im not using his real name)

This is just an example of how im keeping track of this contest if you subscribed, but didn’t follow on Facebook or Twitter, and I pull your name.. you wont win. SO make sure your on one or the other! Im also keeping track of who has subscribed so after the contest is over, when some of you (and I know some of you will) un-sub.. you will be blocked from any future contests on my site.

Anyways, yes I know im at 100 subs, but no its not legit.. if the newb & his 10+ accounts doesn’t un-sub the accounts by friday, I will put him and his accounts on the no more contests list, and pick a winner from who ever is on my sub list.

Thanks for watching Guys & Gals!
